1. The BARN Jacket

It was Prada that really set the trend soaring (no surprise there). Spring ’24 to be exact, where barn jackets walked down the runway with leg-baring fringed skirts in a deliciously idiosyncratic clash typical of Mrs. Prada. Toteme’s version, which sits close to the original style (cotton canvas, corduroy collar, catch-all pockets), would look great layered over a silk slip. Or this dress. As would Rabanne’s, lined in silver foil. Similarly elevated and entering trench territory is Brandon Maxwell’s gabardine take, which looks luxurious yet casual over sequins.
Of course, the barn jacket works just as well in its natural habitat: with jeans and a tee or sweater, or tossed into the bottom of your carry-on as you board the plane to Nantucket. East coasters use theirs to contend with chilly summers in Maine—and it can also be tossed over swim for a post-beach trip to the Farmer’s Market in the Hamptons. At the other end of the spectrum is Adam Lippes’ hyper-feminine do-over in pink satin. Only the fabulous—and unfazed—need apply.
